Sleep and how it can affect our skin.

Iam a BIG sleep lover. Without it, I’m left feeling sluggish, grumpy and fragile.

We have all heard of the phrase ‘beauty sleep’, but does sleep really affect our beauty?

Studies have proven that getting just 6 hours of sleep each night, instead of the recommended 8 hours, really does have a negative effect on your skin and overall health. Sleep deprivation over a long period of time, can cause premature ageing within the skin, increased oil flow; causing overall oiliness, a dull complexion, broken capillaries, bags underneath the eye area and an overall uneven skin tone.

In today’s world, being busy is a part of everyday life. Whether you’re a busy mother; running around trying to juggle a million things at once, a hard-working employee or a boss taking on the world, being busy is part of our day-to-day schedule.

As we sleep, our body’s hydration levels re balance and our skin and body begin to heal and repair from the damaging effects of the day gone by; eliminating toxins from deep within the skin. As we sleep, our body’s nervous system switches to a ‘parasympathetic’ state (sometimes called the rest and digest phase), which allows increased circulation and oxygen flow to the skin. It is during this state, that our skin begins to repair; building more collagen, while also draining fluid and toxins from within.

When sleep time is reduced, this interrupts the body’s ability to carry out these important functions, causing excessive fluid to gather underneath our eyes, causing puffiness, overall complexion dullness and under eye darkness – due to lack of blood flow to the skin and the breakdown of collagen, causing premature ageing and loss of elasticity.

What I want to instil in you, is that rest, is an important part of your skincare routine. It’s just as important as the food you eat and the skincare you apply each day. Without a good night’s sleep, our body begins to struggle; affecting our overall health, the functionality of our skin and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Fresh Face Skin was first developed to encourage this healing action within the skin, as we sleep. By applying a powerful blend of natural ingredients to the skin each night, you’re enabling your skin to heal and recover to the best of its ability. Our Overnight Treatments are here to bring your skin back to good health, with the ability to work deep within the skin; correcting those deep skin concerns, while adding moisture and hydration to your skins surface layers; improving hydration levels and protecting your skin from environmental damage, caused by everyday life.

Finding it hard to fall asleep at night? The following tips may help you doze off quicker!

    • Try to sleep to a sleeping schedual – go to sleep at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This helps to regulate your body’s clock and could help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night.
    • Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. A relaxing activity done right before bedtime, done away from bright lights & loud noise, will help to relax your body and mind, clearing it from stresses and anxiety. Meditation, deep breathing yoga and stretching are a few ways to help calm your body and mind before you hop into bed each night.
    • If you have trouble sleeping, avoid naps, especially in the afternoon. Power napping may help you get through the day, but if you find that you can’t fall asleep once its bedtime, eliminating even short catnaps may help.
    • Exercise daily. Regular exercise gets the heart pumping and the body moving, helping to tire your limbs, ready for rest at the end of the day.
    • Avoid TV or phone usage 30 minutes before bed. Multiple research studies have concluded that smartphone use before bed is bad for our sleep, as it disrupts the production of the important sleep hormone melatonin and tricks your mind into thinking it needs to stay awake.
    • Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.  At the end of the day, your mattress and pillows are what are supporting your neck, back and body, for 6 or more hours every, single night. Invest in a good one and if you’ve had yours for over 9-10 years, it’s recommended to replace it.

Make a promise to yourself that tonight you’re going to get a good night’s sleep. Your body does so much for you, so give it the chance to recover and heal. Make it a habit, and your overall well being and skin will thank you for it!
